Mineral Supplements in Portugal: Magnesium, Zinc, Iron, Selenium and Chromium

Minerals: the essentials. Minerals are micronutrients the body does not produce, so they have to come from your diet. In this collection you will find magnesium, zinc, iron, selenium, chromium, copper, calcium and potassium from NOW Foods, Osavi, OstroVit, Swanson, Life Extension and other brands, as well as combined formulas and electrolytes.

Magnesium and zinc. Magnesium contributes to normal muscle function and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. Zinc contributes to the normal function of the immune system, to normal protein synthesis and to the maintenance of normal hair, nails and skin. See the magnesium and zinc collections.

Iron, selenium and copper. Iron contributes to normal formation of red blood cells and haemoglobin and to normal oxygen transport in the body — see the iron collection. Selenium contributes to normal thyroid function and to the maintenance of normal hair and nails; copper contributes to normal iron transport in the body.

Chromium, calcium and potassium. Chromium contributes to the maintenance of normal blood glucose levels; calcium is needed for the maintenance of normal bones; potassium contributes to normal muscle function and to the maintenance of normal blood pressure. These claims apply to products providing at least 15% of the nutrient reference value (NRV) per daily dose.

Dosage and safety. EFSA has set daily upper levels for adults, for example 25 mg of zinc, 255 mcg of selenium, 5 mg of copper and 250 mg of magnesium from supplements. Some products come close to or exceed these values: do not exceed the recommended dose and add up the minerals from all the supplements you take.
