Amino Acids in Portugal: EAAs, BCAAs, Glutamine, Citrulline and Beta-Alanine

What amino acids are. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. Nine are essential (EAAs), because the body cannot make them and they must come from food; they include the three branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs): leucine, isoleucine and valine. The rest can be made by the body.

Our amino acid range. In this collection you will find EAA and BCAA powders (Applied Nutrition Amino Fuel, XTEND), L-glutamine, glycine, taurine, L-arginine, citrulline malate, beta-alanine, HMB, acetyl-L-carnitine, L-tryptophan and NAC, from brands such as NOW Foods, Applied Nutrition, Olimp, Nutrex, Osavi and Dedicated Nutrition.

What EU law says. There are no authorised health claims in the EU for individual amino acids such as BCAAs, glutamine or citrulline. We therefore only state what each product is, its form and the amount per serving. If your goal is to increase your protein intake, a protein powder provides all the essential amino acids and, in that case, protein contributes to a growth in muscle mass and to the maintenance of muscle mass.

Beta-alanine and citrulline. They are widely used by people who train and also feature in many pre-workouts. Beta-alanine may cause a harmless, temporary tingling of the skin (paraesthesia).

Formats. You will find amino acids as powders to mix with water, and as capsules or tablets, which are handy for fixed doses. Always follow the manufacturer's recommended daily dose and do not exceed it.

FAQ — BCAAs or EAAs? EAAs include all nine essential amino acids, whereas BCAAs include only three of them. Compare the composition per serving on each product page.
