Zinc in Portugal: Zinc Picolinate, Zinc 50 mg and Formulas with Calcium and Magnesium
Zinc: the essentials. Zinc is a mineral found in meat, shellfish, pulses, nuts and seeds. In this collection you will find NOW Foods Zinc Picolinate 50 mg and Zinc 50 mg, as well as formulas combining zinc with calcium and magnesium.
Authorised claims. Zinc contributes to the normal function of the immune system, to the maintenance of normal hair, nails and skin, to normal protein synthesis, to the maintenance of normal bones, to the maintenance of normal vision, to normal cognitive function, to the maintenance of normal testosterone levels in the blood and to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. These claims apply to products providing at least 15% of the nutrient reference value (NRV) per daily dose.
Dosage and upper level. The NRV for zinc is 10 mg. A 50 mg tablet provides 500% NRV and twice the 25 mg/day upper level set by EFSA for adults. Long-term intake of high doses of zinc may reduce copper absorption. Do not exceed the recommended dose and talk to your doctor before long-term use.
Forms of zinc. Picolinate and gluconate are zinc salts used in supplements; what matters is the amount of elemental zinc per serving shown on the label. If you take a multivitamin, check whether it already contains zinc.
