Ashwagandha, Maca, Bacopa and Mushrooms: Plant Extracts in Portugal

This collection brings together plant and mushroom extracts such as ashwagandha, maca, bacopa, cordyceps and lion's mane, from brands such as NOW Foods, Osavi, OstroVit and Swanson. These ingredients have no authorised health claims in the EU, so we describe them factually: species, plant part, extract type and dose.

Ashwagandha: Withania somnifera root, available as root powder or as standardised extracts such as KSM-66®, with the withanolide content stated on the label. See the full ashwagandha range.

Maca and other roots: maca (Lepidium meyenii) is an Andean root, sold raw or gelatinised, in 500 to 1000 mg capsules. You will also find fenugreek, ginkgo and other extracts in herbal supplements.

Formulas with vitamins and melatonin: where a formula includes vitamins, the claims for those vitamins apply: for example, vitamin B12 contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue (see B complex). Melatonin contributes to the reduction of time taken to fall asleep; the beneficial effect is obtained by consuming 1 mg of melatonin close to bedtime.

Safety: do not exceed the recommended daily dose. Plant extracts may interact with medicines: consult your doctor before use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or have a medical condition.
