Vitamin C in Portugal: Capsules, Buffered Powder, Liposomal and Collagen with Vitamin C

Vitamin C: the essentials. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is not produced by the human body and comes mainly from fruit and vegetables such as citrus fruit, kiwi, peppers and broccoli. In this collection you will find vitamin C supplements from NOW Foods, Life Extension and Osavi, plus products that include vitamin C in their formula, such as collagen and hydration drinks.

Authorised claims. Vitamin C contributes to the normal function of the immune system, to normal collagen formation for the normal function of blood vessels, bones, cartilage, gums, skin and teeth, to normal energy-yielding metabolism, to the protection of cells from oxidative stress and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, and it increases iron absorption. These claims apply to products providing at least 15% of the nutrient reference value (NRV) per daily dose.

Forms of vitamin C. NOW Foods Vitamin C-1000 provides ascorbic acid in capsules; Life Extension buffered vitamin C powder uses mineral ascorbates, which are less acidic; Osavi liposomal vitamin C presents vitamin C encapsulated in phospholipids. Choose the form you prefer — they all provide vitamin C.

Collagen with vitamin C. In collagen products with added vitamin C, it is the vitamin C that contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin, cartilage and bones. See more under collagen and hydration and electrolytes.

Dosage. The NRV for vitamin C is 80 mg, so 1000 mg equals 1250% NRV. High doses may cause gastrointestinal discomfort in sensitive people; if so, split the dose across meals or choose a buffered form.
