Omega-3 in Portugal: Fish Oil, EPA and DHA, Algae DHA, Cod Liver Oil and Evening Primrose
Omega-3: the essentials. EPA and DHA are found mainly in oily fish such as sardines, mackerel and salmon; ALA occurs in linseed and walnuts. In this collection you will find fish oil from NOW Foods, Osavi, OstroVit and Nordic Naturals, algae DHA (a plant-based source), cod liver oil, evening primrose oil, omega 3-6-9 from linseed and sunflower lecithin.
Authorised claims. EPA and DHA contribute to the normal function of the heart — the beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of 250 mg of EPA and DHA. DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function and normal vision — the beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of 250 mg of DHA.
How to read the label. What counts is the amount of EPA and DHA per serving, not the total milligrams of oil: "1000 mg fish oil" does not mean 1000 mg of omega-3. For example, NOW Foods Ultra Omega-3 and Osavi Omega 3 Super Forte state 500 mg EPA and 250 mg DHA. Also compare the number of capsules per serving and the format: softgels, mini gels or lemon-flavoured liquid oil.
Cod liver, evening primrose and other fats. Cod liver oil naturally provides vitamins A and D — keep your total vitamin A in mind if you take other supplements or are pregnant. Evening primrose oil is a source of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), sunflower lecithin provides phospholipids and CLA is a fatty acid; they are described by composition only, without health claims. See also vitamin D.
For children and babies. Nordic Naturals Daily Omega Kids and Baby's DHA are formulated for little ones: follow the dose on the label and, if in doubt, talk to your paediatrician.
