Protein Bars: Buy Protein Bars in Portugal

Protein bars to take with you. Protein bars are a practical way to include protein in a snack: they need no preparation and fit in your gym bag or handbag. The protein bars we sell are grouped in our bars collection, with brands such as Barebells, Optimum Nutrition, BioTechUSA and Applied Nutrition.

What to check on the label. Compare the protein per bar, sugar, saturated fat and energy. Many bars use polyols (such as maltitol) instead of sugar: excessive consumption may produce laxative effects. Also check whether the bar contains sweeteners, and the allergens, such as milk, soya, nuts or peanuts.

Nutrition claims. A bar can only be described as a “source of protein” if protein provides at least 12% of its energy, and as “high in protein” if it provides at least 20%. In those cases, protein contributes to a growth in muscle mass and to the maintenance of muscle mass.

When to eat one. Mid-morning or mid-afternoon, after training when you have no time for a meal, or when travelling. A bar is a snack and does not replace a varied and balanced diet.

FAQ — Do protein bars contain sugar? It depends on the bar. Some are low in sugar because they use polyols or sweeteners; others contain chocolate or caramel with sugar. The term “low sugar” only applies at 5 g or less per 100 g.
